Awards Hat’s Off Award
Winners of the 2011 Gibby Award August 3rd thru August 7th was the annual Bark Camp workweek and trail ride. During this week OHC members come in and work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday on clearing trails, improving things at the horse camp, building bridges for horse crossing, and etc. The park gives these people free camping during the work. It is a very hard working weekend but also a very fun weekend. On Saturday you can participate in corn hole contest, putt putt golf, meeting at Troy and Anne’s campsite for homemade ice cream and birthday cake because they are always turning a year old on this weekend! Last year 2010 our own Rick Patterson won the Gibby Award for his outstanding contribution and dedications to working on trail around the state. Rick was totally surprised. Thank you Rick for your continued support and undying work that you do for the OHC! This year was normal for the week. The attendance was down maybe because of the heat and predicted rain. Wednesday started the activities. OHC volunteers worked in camp using DR mowers and using the skidder to even out dirt and put screenings down making where you tie the horses better. Friday they headed out using DR mowers, chainsaws, manual labor to get the trails cleared, and a bridge built. You might just picture these workers as a colony of ants on a mission! The weather was not the greatest. It was great for the working days but when it was time to relax and climb aboard your horse Mother Nature decided to bless us with more rain. This didn’t prevent us from enjoying the Saturday dinner with meat, drinks supplied by the OHC, and potluck dishes added by volunteers. Mother Nature was kind enough to let us enjoy this and to award the 2011 new Gibby winner. As Chris Green read the description of the 2011 Gibby Award winner, I was hearing things that I had witnessed so much in my life with this couple. They are always at work details county or state. I don’t think they ever missed the annual Partnership work weekend! They put their heart and soul in making things happen, you can hear them arguing a little about details on almost anything they do but we all know this is what makes their relationship so special! If you think it is Craig and Charlene Santee, then you are correct. Congratulations to two dedicated OHC members! I was sitting next to them as the letter was being read. This award took Craig and Charlene by total surprise! I think for the first time Craig was totally speechless! Now Charlene wasn’t but you could tell they were both taken back by being awarded this honor. I have to say they are very deserving of this award! We all in the OHC thank you for your outstanding work on making the state parks, private parks, and national forest a better place for us to ride! Cinda Wilson - A friend
Members,
Pictures - You took them - We want them! For the web page and the scrapbook! Email them to webmaster@lickingcountyohc.org and we will do the rest. Newsletter - Bonnie has added a column in our club newsletter! It is entitled "What's Happening!" It is for our members to write their own short paragraph about news you would like to share with the membership. Example: A ride you went on that wasn't a club ride, you got a new horse or had a new foal, a funny experience you had while out riding, a new place to ride that others might like, you heard one of our members is sick or had surgery and others might not know and want to send a card. We want to know what our members are doing! Bonnie will try to get all things in but our regular club news comes first and then all extra space will be filled with your news items. You can e-mail her at cpwings@embarqmail.com or mail it to Bonnie Clary at 12639 Appleton Rd., Croton, OH 43013
Bill and Bonnie’s Hog Roast I want to put out this thank you to Bill and Bonnie Clary for the fantastic hog roast they put on for our membership, their friends, and family! It was a wonderful evening. Young, old, and in-between had a great time. Bill and Bonnie thought of everything. You could sit and talk or get into the action of horse stick races, wagon rides, fishing, scavenger hurt, or playing corn hole. No could have gotten bored! The weather was on our side and even helped to make it a more wonderful evening for all! Whoever prepared the hog did a great job! You could have it plain, barbecued, darken, in a sandwich or out of a sandwich! The dishes brought by guest were different and good! What a variety!!! There was no way you could have tasted every dish! If you don’t like to eat, you were at the wrong place! I want to say thank you from the Licking OHC to Bill and Bonnie for hosting this and inviting our membership! A job well done! Cinda Wilson
May meeting notes from Cinda Wilson Social Committee - Some of the social members (Arlene and Cinda) went to listen to the band that was being considered to play at the 2011 OHC Christmas Party. The Pleasant Valley Boys were playing in Cambridge so we drove over to a fun raiser where they were playing. Arlene and Cinda both agreed that they played a variety of music and the square dancing calling was easy to follow. They were hired. Now the social committee has the Franklin Grange Center booked for December 10th and the Pleasant Valley Boy providing the entertainment. Cinda said later this summer the committee will meet to firm up the menu of what the committee is fixing and who is getting what. They are looking ahead to December social events! Arlene England &Cinda Wilson, Co-chairs of Social Committee Park Liaison- Cinda reported that the power washing and trash emptying has been going well. Everyone has stepped up when it has been their turn and done a very good job! Even other OHC members are seeing things needing done and stepping up to the plate, helping the park with maintenance issues. We had several men go up and do the mowing around the horse arena and weed eating. I have another couple that has been trimming back the weeds under the picnic tables at Infirmary, Taft, and trimming around the trash containers, and even repaired a loose board on an outhouse! They will soon be heading to Lobdell to check out their needs! Cathy Fetter of the Park District told me how pleased she is with the OHC helps! We are helping so much and all this help is appreciated. Thank you!!! I have expressed before how proud I am of our membership. We are truly Horseman Helping Horseman. We are allowing all horse people and non-horse people to enjoy using the Licking Park District parks! We aren’t sitting around to see what others will do, we are doing what we can to help! Cinda Wilson, Park Liaison President - Cinda informed members attending the May meeting about the outbreaks of the EHV (Equine Herpes Virus). This virus can cause four manifestation of disease in horses, including neurological form, respiratory disease, abortion, and neonatal death. If you are traveling to the Western States (Utah, Colorado, California, Idaho, Arizona, Florida, Western Canada then your horse could be infected! Your horse could be infected by just going to a contest or show that has horse that have contacted the virus but not showing symptoms yet. Cinda was telling members you can order FLUVAC INNOVATOR 6 WITH METASTIM that will protect your horse from getting the full blown virus. This $21.99 shot could save your horse. These shots can be ordered from Jeffers –1-800-533-3377 or United Vet Equine 1-800-328-6652 for $22.75You would need one shot and then a booster in 3 to 4 weeks. These shots last for one year! Something to think about. I travel with our horses and they are worth the cost of a shot! Is yours? Our chapter had gotten e-mails asking for money donation to help the Insight Horse Camp for the blind and visually impaired children. The camp cost $400 for the week so if chapters, groups, or individuals would donate they could reduce the fee to $125. Our membership voted to donate $50 to the cause. This camp is located in Zanesfield, Ohio. Another e-mail for a money donation was received from Wayne County OHC. The Malabar Farm State Park Campground needs new picket lines. Our membership voted to give $200 for this project. You can see that our membership gives money to local and not so local things that help people benefit from the use of horses or help others to enjoy camping more with theirs. Cinda Wilson, President
Licking County OHC Needs your Help!!!! The Licking OHC has been approached to help the Licking Park Board keep the Infirmary Mound Park open and operating. We can do this! Please read This Letter from our President, Cinda, for all the details...
Hats Off to Jim Corman!!! Our Awards Committee considered carefully the nominations for this award and went by the state guidelines on who qualified. Jim Corman took the 2010 Award. If you don't know Jim Corman, you haven't been to our meetings, trail maintenance work days, Fun Shows, Tack Auction, etc! Jim was awarded this special honor for his work beyond his duties for the Licking OHC. Jim has been the driving force in getting camping at Dillon. Jim joined the Friends of Dillon and spoke up for equine activity at the park. Jim also has headed up the maintenance of the trails. If it wasn't for Jim Corman, you wouldn't be able to camp at Dillon. Jim hasn't always been into horses. Previously, his horses came in the horsepower in engines. Then he jumped with both feet into equine horses. We are sure glad he made the switch!Jim spoke last night even before getting the Award that he has more great plans for Dillon. It will take time and money to accomplish these goals but knowing Jim he will succeed! Hats off to Jim Corman! When you see him, give him a pat on the back for his special efforts!
Election Results The 2011 officers have been elected! If you did not attend the November meeting, here are the results: President: Cinda Wilson Vice President: Paul Wilson Secretary: Debbie Stevens Treasurer: Mark Stevens If you can remember Wilson and Stevens you will remember who our 2011 officers are! It was pointed out last night that Paul and Cinda Wilson are not related but Mark and Debbie are a married couple. We want to say "Thank you" to our outgoing President, Terry Baker. Terry stepped up and led our chapter for the last three years. Our chapter would not exist without people stepping up to take on offices and being on our committees. Each member is a part that incorporates the chapter and makes it a well running organization. One person can make a big difference!
